Associate Counsellor
Hello, I’m William. Whatever brought you here I’d love an opportunity to hear you and work with you so you can move forward with confidence.
I am a counsellor and member of the BACP. I studied at both the Gestalt Centre and The Metanoia Institute in humanistic counselling for a total of four years in London. I run a small private practice and work with local Cambridge charities. I also mentor students at Cambridge University with their Accessibility and Disability Resource Centre.
What is Humanistic Counselling?
I am a humanistic counsellor; this is a style of therapy I’m trained in. Essentially this means I believe you are the expert on you, and my job is not to lead you but to work with and support you towards your goals. You may see this relationship where I am like a guide, I can help nudge your boat down the river rather than take the wheel. This also means I work with a holistic perspective, meaning I believe you are more than the sum of any one of your parts, and each part of you impacts the rest. No one thing defines you completely.
I am also influenced by Jung, and Jungian Shadow work – shadow meaning the parts of ourselves we may repress or deny that show up and can drive our lives whether we want them to or not. This can lead to patterns, historic or new.
I want to make sure you get the most out of your time with me, and part of my process includes understanding how you would like to work. We will also work towards you feeling capable to deal with issues without me, in your own way.
What to expect with me?
I won’t push you in any direction, and we can go as deep or as far as you wish to go. I am led by you.
Therapy is unique to each person, therefore how I work will change in response to you. This means it’s hard to define exactly how we will work together! However, my attention to curiosity about you and my natural compassion can support the expansion of awareness, as well as hold emotions of all kinds and challenges with the skill it requires. Once we build a relationship together, and if you want to work in this way, I can offer ideas, exercises, or appropriate challenge to help integrate the work into your daily life and facilitate bold discoveries.
Who do I work with?
I’m open to all clients. I have a particular passion for identity, and for men’s issues, men’s mental health, and masculinity. This applies irrespective of your biological sex or gender, as issues with men and masculinity are present for us all.
If you want to get in touch for sessions, please visit my website or email me. To begin, we will have an initial session to establish if we will work well together, and if we are a fit for each other, we will begin counselling sessions from there on.
